Fair Weather Traveller
March 25, 2008
Apparently I´m a fair weather traveller: rain, snow, ice and respectable chunks of hail made the side trip to Poland this weekend distinctly unappealing. Somewhat ironically, I spent the bulk of the 4-day weekend in the aforementioned rain, snow, ice and hail walking around Berlin. I stopped by some of my usual haunts (Hackescher Markt for boots!) and ate myself silly on cake at a rather lovely restaurant called Kuchen Kaiser (Cake Emperor). Berlin is well known for its vast selection of flea markets, and I spent a good chunk of Sunday morning at a huge one in the former east, but found the prices to be head explodingly-high. Some fellow wanted 15 euro for a used cocktail shaker, and I refused to start bargaining from there. We also visited the breathtakingly stark Soviet War Memorial at Treptower Park (photos in a day or so) that was opened in 1949 to commemorate Soviet soldiers who died towards the end of WWII.
Somewhat guiltily, I am actually still in Berlin (and yes, skipping work today) as I was not able to get up the motivation this morning to head back to Hamburg. Ehhh, perhaps tomrorrow...

Hey - My coworker says there is a sizable Turkish population in Hamburg - which in his world translates to good lamb eats. Can you confirm? Alma
