Who wants their teeth done by Marqui DeSade?

I don't have a strong aversion to going to the dentist; I mean, who doesn't love a little time off work and a free toothbrush? Not to mention a denture-free future. Plus, the survey my Seattle dentist has you fill on the first visit actually includes the question "How do you feel about your teeth?." He also offers mild sedatives for folks with dental anxiety and has a vast array of DVDs you can watch during your cleaning. I worked my way through all 3 X-men movies over the years. Plus, they take note of any preferences and discuss them with you before they begin. Thusly, I am not tortured with the nasty baby aspirin flavored tooth polish. Twice a year, it's fine.

Before I left for Germany, I visited both my doctor and dentist for a checkup. In both places I was informed (without my prompting) that medical care in Germany is most excellent, but that the dental care is still operating in the paleolithic. Grrrrreat! Perhaps because of that, I put off going to the dentist here for almost a year. This morning I visited a dentist. I have a decent relationship with my teeth (I feel good about them!) but still expect a little more scraping than usual. I had done a fair amount of research and gotten referrals. I had even waited 3 weeks for an appointment (I figured that was a good sign). You know where this is going, right? To the painful place.

After a bit of consideration, I won't traumatize you with the details. But, its safe to say it was orders of magnitude more painful and strange than anything that has ever been done to me in the US. They actually numbed my gums before they began! I complained rather loudly and got them to change the way they were cleaning my teeth, which made things a little better. But, still, it was not pretty.

That's horrible Kari = I have serious dental anxiety from years of mistreatment as a child so I don't think I could ever handle that...
