Fall: This Summer in Hamburg
July 21, 2008
The front page of the Hamburg monthly arts newspaper for July boldly stated:
Summer: This summer also in Hamburg.
Well, the bastards lied. Without complaining too much about the weather about the last few weeks, let's focus on today. Roughly 50 degrees, and pouring all day. At some point during the day, I even shut my office door and stripped down to my skivvies to put on a pair of leggings underneath my pants. I sat in my office wrapped in a coat and scarf, but still shivered for most of the day. Its been a good four weeks since we last had a decent bit of continuous sun. The good news, however, is that in exactly 10 days I will be on a train headed to Frankfurt, where I will board a plane to Singapore, where I will hang out a bit, and then after a journey of more than 30 hours, I will land in Sydney. Even though its technically winter there, it appears to be a twilight-zone version of winter, with endless stretches of sunny, 70-degree weather. This trip is muuuuch further than I've ever flow before, and I can't help but be intimidated at the thought of spending that much time on a plane, I'm ready to go just about wherever to get some proper summer weather.
